I enjoy watching documentaries in my free time.
Historical, economic, cultural, industrial, commercial, pretty much
any topic. Lately I have been watching the War Factories series on
YouTube. It looks at how different countries managed industrial
production during World War II. Most of the episodes focus on the
United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, since they were the
main industrial powers in the war.
The episode I watched recently is a mix of United States segments
from Timeline. It shows how factories shifted from cars and consumer
goods to guns, tanks, planes, and ships. The scale of production is
impressive, and the documentary explains how this effort became a
turning point in the war. By allowing private industry to
contribute, the United States out produced all other nations and
supplied equipment to allied nations through Lend Lease.
While not mentioned in the documentary, it is often said that a
German officer gave the quote: "One German tank is worth four
American tanks, but the problem was the Allies always had five
of them."
